Fishing 3 vignette

Our trip to Aikens Lake Lodge was really an incredible experience from start to finish, but for me, it was about much more than just going fishing.

I originally planned this trip because I wanted to create some wonderful memories with my 13-year-old grandson, Reid. Like most kids his age, he spends a lot of time on his phone, and I wanted to give him an opportunity to get away from all of that for a while and for the two of us to spend some real quality time together just fishing and talking.

Reid loves fishing, which is one of the reasons Aikens Lake was such a perfect choice for us—and why we decided to return for a second time. Being out on the lake together gave us something that can be hard to find in everyday life: uninterrupted time to talk, laugh, fish and simply enjoy each other’s company. There weren’t all the usual distractions. We had time to really talk to each other and that meant so much to me.

Of course, the fishing was a huge highlight. We caught a lot of beautiful walleye and northern pike, and our guide, Kurt, was exceptional. He was extremely knowledgeable, personable and knew the lake so well. Everything we needed was provided, from the fishing equipment to rain gear, so we really didn’t have to worry about anything except enjoying ourselves.

One of our favorite experiences was the shore lunches. They were exceptional. We would stop during the day and eat the fish we had just caught, freshly prepared right there on shore. Sitting together and eating fresh walleye beside the lake, surrounded by the beautiful Manitoba wilderness, is one of those experiences you just don’t forget.

The accommodations were wonderful. We stayed in a beautiful two-bedroom cabin that slept six. It was spacious, comfortable and very well appointed. The food throughout our stay was exceptional—we looked forward to every meal.

In the evenings, we would go to the main lodge, where there’s a bar, pool table and other games. It gave Reid and me even more time together, and it was a wonderful way to relax after being out on the lake all day.

What also makes Aikens Lake so special are the people. Pit, Julie, Pat and Janelle were wonderful hosts. They were so personable and would be there in the evenings talking with us and asking about our day and what we had caught. The entire staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. We really couldn’t have asked for more.

Even getting there was part of the adventure. We were picked up in Winnipeg, and because Aikens Lake is only accessible by float plane, we flew into the lodge. That was a great experience in itself and made you feel as though you were truly getting away from everything.

For me, though, the greatest thing we brought home wasn’t the story of how many fish we caught. It was the time Reid and I had together. We talked, laughed, shared experiences and made memories that I hope he’ll carry with him for the rest of his life—and I know I will.

That’s really why we came back for a second time. Aikens Lake gave my grandson and me something very special: time together. And you can’t put a price on that.

We just returned from Aikens Lake Wilderness Lodge last Friday, after spending 3+ days fishing with my two sons, and all I can say is WOW!

The trip was fantastic, and everything you see on the website is actually as good or better than shown. The entire team at Aikens is focused on delivering service and making sure the guests are having a good time. Every time we asked a question, we found the team is inclined to do whatever they can to support your requests and find a way to make it happen. We stayed in Park Place and it was perfect for us. The rooms are clean and you soon forget how isolated and remote you are because the accommodations are fantastic. The fishing was great, and while our group did not get a trophy, we caught lots of walleyes in the 22" to 25" range and several very nice pike as well. Our guide Kieran kept us on the fish and was super accommodating about fishing evenings as well. He also did a great job on the shore lunches, mixing it up every day. Chef Colin provided very good entrees at dinner and we never left the table hungry. Pit, Julie, Pat, Janelle, Annika, Jess, Linnea, Quinn and every team member we interacted with were simply a joy to be around. We had a very fun, relaxing trip, and we left already thinking about how we can put together a return visit. If you are considering a trip to Aikens, do it....you will not be disappointed.

Not only did we get to experience the thrill of catching fish, you provided an extraordinary, life changing experience for our girls, one that none of us will ever forget.

We travelled as a group of 12 to Aikens Lake, July of 2020. There was a mixed bag of ages and interests in our family's group, in fact, my 16 year old daughter was not shy to declare to us..."Fine. I will go. But under no circumstances will I fish or even EAT fish." Within half a day at Aikens, with the urging of the staff and the guides, she got in the boat and allowed a rod to be put in her hands. She very quickly discovered the joys of fishing: the shared fellowship of your fishing mates, the joy of having a top notch guide, the fresh air and pristine water, the thrill of the catch, and of course, the beautifully prepared shore lunch after a morning of fishing. This turnaround for my daughter was profound and a life lesson I hope she never forgets: be open to new people and experiences. You never know who or what will take hold.

I have heard many people speak highly of Aikens Lake lodge but this was my first chance to experience it. This place is run so smoothly: with the million details taken care of for each guests' visit, this is no small feat. Of course, as you would expect from a lodge of this calibre, all the big things are well taken care of: the lodging, the food, the social atmosphere, the incredibly endearing staff and guides, all of the small details are also taken care of which makes you feel like your safety, comfort and satisfaction are of the utmost priority. This is a special place.

Janelle, Pat, Julie and Pit (and master guitarist Annika:): thank you again for the wonderful 4 days. Not only did we get to experience the thrill of catching fish, you provided an extraordinary, life changing experience for our girls, one that none of us will ever forget.

Merci encore,
